The Birth of Mary

St. John of Damascus said in a homily:

Let everyone come to this feast; with joy let us celebrate the beginning of joy for the whole world! Today heaven begins on earth; today is the inauguration of salvation for the whole world.

From a Homily of St. Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo:

Dearly beloved: The much desired feast of Blessed Mary ever Virgin has come; so let our land, illumined by such a birth, be glad with great rejoicing. For she is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious Lily of the valley, through whose birth that nature inherited from our first parents is changed and guilt is blotted out.

Response (Morning Prayer):

Today is the birthday of the Virgin-Mother, alleluia!
– Whose life illuminates the whole Church, alleluia!

Antiphon for the Canticle of Zachary:

Great Mother of God,
your birth brings joy to the whole universe,
for from you arose the Sun of righteousness, Christ our Lord,
who broke the curse and conferred the blessing,
who abolished death and brought us life eternal, alleluia!
