Consecration Renewal – Day 26

Day 26 of Consecration Preparation from 2008 (or renewal)

From “Mary, Human and Holy” (Antonio Bello)
Chapter 25: Woman of the Banquet

In the opening paragraph Bishop Bello explains the title of this chapter – a medieval writer by the name of Ildephonse of Toledo once described Mary as “the noble banquet table for the three divine Persons”. Bishop Bello writes:  “This splendid and bold image places Our Lady in relation to the Trinity. It compares Mary to an elegant table around which the Father, the Son, and the Spirit express their conviviality.”

Bishop Bello reflects on the Holy Trinity:  “…three Persons together in solidarity of life and communion of works”; and “…three equal and distinct Persons live their communion to such a degree that they are one God.”

On earth, “Every group that wants to live in the light of the Gospel carries within itself something sacramental. By its nature, it is a sign and instrument of the Trinitarian communion. It should replicate the logic of the Trinity, live out its communion, and express its mystery”, be it the family, the parish, the religious institute, the diocese, the prayer group, the seminary… the individuals within these groups come together to “live their communion so as to form one single body: the body of Christ.”

Just as Mary has a unique relationship with each Person of the Trinity, as daughter, mother and spouse, so too she has a special relationship to the one God, so “we can imagine how important is the role she plays in those earthly communities that reflect the Trinitarian communion.”

Holy Mary, nourish in our local churches the desire for communion. They should bring into the world the desire and the impetus for Trinitarian communion, like so many Eucharistic particles scattered over the earth. Help them to overcome their disagreements. Intervene whenever discord rises in their hearts. Extinguish the hotbeds of factions and settle their conflicts.

Mary, perhaps only in heaven will we discover how important you are in the growth of our human communion.
