Consecration Renewal – Day 20

Day 20 of Consecration Preparation from 2008 (or renewal)

From “Mary, Human and Holy” (Antonio Bello)
Chapter 19: Woman of Service

Bishop Bello begins this chapter with the thought that Mary has actually chosen this title herself, for twice in the Gospel of Luke she referred to herself as a servant: when she spoke to the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, and also in the Magnificat.

He describes how Mary gave herself to God body and soul, in complete submission, in order to serve Him:

You are truly a servant whom grace has introduced into the intimacy of the Trinity and has made into a treasure chest of divine confidences. You are a servant of the kingdom and you gladly give service, knowing that it does not reduce your freedom but makes you participate in the lineage of God.

Bishop Bello then outlines some of our human weaknesses that can hold us back from complete submission to God and therefore from living a life of complete service: we have trouble depending on God, we find unconditional surrender very difficult, we sometimes don’t trust the Lord and see everything as a game of chance, we confuse submission with slavery, and we want to assert our autonomy.

But we can pray to Mary to help us in our lives of service:

Holy Mary, servant of the Word, besides listening to it and keeping it, you accepted the Word incarnate in Christ. Help us to place Jesus at the center of our lives so that we might hear his secret suggestions….

Make the Gospel the inspiring norm for all of our everyday choices. Keep us from the temptation of cutting corners on its demands. Help us to obey cheerfully.
